Towards the end of the century and in to the early 1800s, individual counties started to appear with a range of new title pages. Many of these referred not only to the Rev. Cox but also to Elizabeth Nutt, M Nutt and even to J Morphew and giving the address “In the Savoy”. Publication details (date and identity of the publisher) remain obscure. The number of different title pages (even for one county) gives the impression that many printers were involved, and hence, many sellers (rather than publishers).

The dates and the publishers given on these title pages show knowledge of the history of the text sheets but there are occasional errors. Examples 1 and 2 are dated MDDCC and 1700 but A New Description did not appear until 1701 (with maps in their original original state) and many counties have a date which predates their actual (series) publication.

Precise dating of these issues is almost impossible; however, two copies of Example 1 below have been found with watermarks. One copy of Lincolnshire in a private library reported by Carroll has a GR watermark above the date 1797. The author´s copy of Devonshire, also Example 1 below, has a Britannia watermark (see above). In this example Britannia is holding the spear or lance at the top. Maxted has illustrated a similar watermark on a document, possibly printed by James Liddell of Bodmin, circa 1790. This document also has a watermark of GR under a crown.[i]

Titles 1-5 are listed by Carroll (1996) and 1, 2a, 4, 3 (resp.) by Hodson (entry 129). No. 6 is previously unrecorded. In examples 1-3 the space for the county name may be left blank, or the county inserted in manuscript or a later (i.e. non-matching) type face.

    Magna Britannia   - Robert Morden´s smaller series of maps 1701 - Introduction This blog deals mainly with the repeated issue of Robert Morden´s smaller maps , first published 1701 but still on sale in the early 1800s. These maps first appeared in an atlas style work in 1701 which was reissued a number of times in 1704 and 1708. In 1715 a serial atlas publication began which would spread over 92 issues and 17 years. Many collectors have this version of the map with accompanying text pages and are not sure of the source / publication details. 1. History   Photo Courtesy of Philip Burden. Robert Morden ( fl . 1668-1703) is known as a globe-maker operating at least as early as 1668 and he was advertising his own printed works by 1671. [i] He occupied premises in New Cheapside and Cornhill where he carried on business under the sign of The Atlas as a map and book seller as well as maker of instruments and globes. He published the first recognisable county map playing card set with William Berry and others ( B&B 15 ) in 1676. Morden is thought to have engraved a series of maps shortly before 1693, for inclusion in Dr. Edmund Gibson´s new edition of  Camden´s Britannia  (which appeared in 1695) and may have rejected them as too small or there was some form of misunderstanding. Most counties found have contemporary binding and are clearly the original printed text from 1715 to 1731, depending on county. They usually lack title page (Example 1): many specifically name Cox on spine/title. A few counties have been seen with Magna Britannia et Hibernia title pages which have been “adapted” (Example 2). Both of these county variations could date from anywhere between original publication date (for relevant county) and 1745. In 1730 specially printed title pages for individual counties (3) appeared.
